Loss of or damage to rental car keys is usually not covered by regular insurance policies. However, you can take out additional cover from ERGO which will cover the costs.

The cost of a key depends on the car rental company and the location and varies between €150 and €300. Any consequential costs caused by the loss of keys, e.g. the towing service, must also be borne by the customer.

Cover yourself against key loss and other breakdowns in advance with additional insurance from our partner, European Travel Insurance (ERGO), and choose the Plus package including car key service. This insures you, amongst other things, for the costs incurred for a replacement key of up to € 1,000 (no excess).

Important
If you lose the key, the theft insurance for the vehicle does not apply. If the rental car is taken with a stolen or found key, this falls under gross negligence. In this case, the person renting the car must reimburse the replacement value of the vehicle.
